Native to the Mediterranean region and Western Europe Arbutus unedo is an evergreen shrub or a tree. The tree is well known for its fruit, which bear some resemblance to the strawberry—hence the common name “strawberry tree”. Produces bright-red fruits in the autumn, which are popular with birds, they are edible for humans, but are unpleasant to taste. They prefer a sheltered spot in full sun, and grow at a slow to moderate rate, so ideal for a smaller garden. In November it produces flowers which are urn-shaped and white, sometimes pink tinged, this contrasts well with the rough shredding red-brown bark and mid-green leathery leaves.
