The Acer Palmatum Bloodgood is a plant that is native to East Asia, particularly Japan, Korea and China. The actual plant has been cultivated around Japan for centuries and only reached Britain’s shores in 1820. They are actually a popular choice for bonsai enthusiasts and have long been subject in art. The plant itself is very hardy at H6 and can survive quite well in Britain’s climate. Only in extreme cold conditions would it be advisable to shelter this plant. Throughout the year the plant is a lovely red and purple flower, with some fruit growing in the winter. The maximum height is about 2.5 m – 4 m and the final sideway spread is about 1.5 m – 2.4 m. Be careful of potential pests and diseases. The habit of this plant is bushy and it is good to maintain the plant within pruning group 1.
