Which is the best climbing plant to cover a fence?

Transform your garden’s vertical spaces with our diverse collection of Climbing Plants, perfect for adding height, fragrance, and seasonal interest. Classic favourites like Wisteria, Clematis, Star Jasmine and Virginia Creeper, our climbers offer both beauty and versatility.

The key to picking the most effective climbing plant to cover a fence is understanding your planting environments conditions, as well as your personal preferences. Are you looking for a lucsious, leafy climber, like ivy, or Virginia Creeper, or a decorative, aromatic, flowering climber, like jasmine or clematis? Evergreens can be both deciduous and evergreen, so its also important to consider whether you would prefer the plant to flower all year round or if you’re okay with it being bare at points in the year. Evergreen climbers, such as Clematis, Jasmine, Aristolochia, and Ivy, remain green and vibrant year round, while deciduous and semi-deciduous varieties such as Bougainvillea, Wisteria, Campsis, and Roses blossom in the spring and summer.

Of course in a perfect world all plants would thrive and bloom all year long, however it is definitely worth the wait when the first buds pop up in spring, filling the garden with a sweet aroma and vibrant colours for the next few months.

If your preference is for your climbing plants to produce flowers and provide colour are Clematis or Star Jasmine. Both produce fragrant, white blossoms in early spring, filling the garden with a sweet, jasmine like scent, and adding both elegance and privacy when used for covering fences, trellises, pergolas or walls.

Clematis flowers from March to April, brightening up the garden after Winter. It thrives best in sun and moist, well-drained soil, it’s hardy and low-maintenance once established. With minimal pruning required, just a light tidy after flowering, it’s a perfect choice for gardeners seeking both beauty and ease. They are also evergree and hardy, making them ideal for the UK climate.

Star Jasmine flowers from May until the end of August, producing simple, pure white, 5-petalled, intensely fragrant flowers. It will flower in full sun, partial shade, or total shade, and requires well-drained soil, moderate water, moderate fertilizer, and a climbing structure. Its evergreen, hardy nature makes it another great candidate for British gardens.

If flowers arent your thing, and privacy is all you seek, Ivy is the perfect option. We supply a variety of Ivy plants, from Boston Ivy, Atlantic / Irish Ivy, and Persian Ivys, to the classic Virginia Creeper. Ivys are vigorous, self-clining evergreen climbers. They are hardy at H5 and therefore perfect for the British climate.
