Pineapple guava or Feijoa sellowiana (named after Portuguese botanist Joo da Silva Feij) is a small evergreen, fruit bearing tree originating from Brazil and northern Argentina. Feijoa sellowiana is grown for its edible fruit which is green tinged with red and tastes like guava. Fruit production is fairly reliable as Feijoa fruit is self-pollinating. Plants grown from seed will take 4-6 years to produce flowers and fruit.
Pineapple guava blooms in July, producing exotic flowers with beautiful white petals enveloping bright red stamens that burst skyward coating the end with yellow pollen granules. The oblong leaves are 7 cm long, green above with woolly white underside. Pineapple guava bark is initially light reddish brown but turns darker and peels with age.

Uses: the pineapple guava plant is fairly easy to grow and makes an outstanding pot plant because of its slow growth. It can be trained into a multi-trunked tree or even grown as a Bonsai. When planted close together, pineapple guava plants make a beautiful hedge
Hardiness:Feijoa sellowiana is well adapted to temperate dry areas and can withstand a few degrees of frost. Pineapple guava has even been grown in western Scotland, but it may not produce fruit every year in colder regions as temperatures below -9 C kill flower buds
Ultimate Size:Feijoa sellowiana is a small tree which normally grows about 3m high though they can grow up to 4m tall in the wild, with a diameter of 1.5 -2m
Position: full sun to part shade
Soil: prefers nutrient rich, moist soil but is able to grow in most soil types provided drainage is good. Must be well drained
Watering: drought resistant but requires a decent amount of water while fruit is maturing. However, too much water will produce lush growth at the expense of flower production. In winter only give just enough water to keep the leaves from dropping
Fertiliser: use monthly during the growing season
-15 °C / -10 °C
