The Taxus Baccata, also known as the English Yew and European Yew, is a plant that is native to Europe. Some of the oldest Yews are located in the British Isles. The Fortingall Yew in Perthshire, Scotland, is reported to be between 2,000 – 3,000 years old. The Llangernyw Yew in Clwyd, Wales, is located at an early saint site and is about 1,500 years old. The Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve in West Sussex has one of Britain’s and Europe’s oldest Yew woodlands. The plant itself is a medium sized bushy evergreen tree and its eventual spread is 10 m (32 ft) and its maximum height is 20 m (65 ft). It is green throughout the year but can start to grow yellow flowers around the spring time. No regular pruning is required but trimming and shaping throughout the spring and summer months is advisable. The hardy rating is (H7) making this plant perfect all year throughout the UK. Fruit can grow in the Autumn time but it is advisable not to eat anything due to high levels of toxicity associated with this plant. Well drained soil, full or sunlight or partial shade is perfect for this plant. Remember that this plant could be prone to potential pests and disease so take care in its maintenance.
